Rice Bran / Thavidu Organic Fertilizer

Rice bran (RB) is a major by-product of rice polishing which is the the brown outer layer of the rice kernel, mainly composed of the pericarp, aleuron, seed coat, and germ.

The main advantage of mixing Rice bran is to keep soil loosen for better Root development.

Rice bran can be considered a good candidate as a sustainable functional ingredient in different manures and also can be transformed into organic fertilizer, effectively enriching crops with essential nutrients and optimizing soil utilization. Phytochemicals, proteins, dietary fiber and minerals are some of its components. Rice bran is used in different methods like making of mixtures etc.

How to use Rice Bran / Thavidu Organic Fertilizer

Rice bran is used in different methods as follows:-

  • Mixing Rice Bran with Soil:

It can be mixed with soil to improve its nutrient content and texture. Mixing 10% to 20% Rice bran by volume is a good starting point.

  • Applying Rice Bran as a Mulch:

They can also be used as a mulch around plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Spread a layer of Rice bran around the base of your plants, be careful not to cover the stems or leaves. Layer of 2 to 3 inches should suffice.

  • Using Rice Bran in Composting:

It is an excellent addition to compost piles. It can provide a good source of carbon, which is necessary for healthy composting. Add the Rice bran to your compost pile in layers as an alternative to green material (such as kitchen scraps and grass clippings). Aim for a ratio of  3 parts Rice bran to 1 part green material.

  • Using Rice Bran as a Soil Amendment:

They can also be used as a soil amendment to improve soil fertility. Spread a layer of Rice bran over the soil and work it into the top few inches with a hoe or rake. Generally, aim for a thickness of 1 to 2 inches.

  • Using Rice Bran to make liquid fertilizer

Rice bran along with cow dung and other organic manures can be made into a liquid fertilizer by making them ferment for 7 to 10 days. It will provide you with a fast acting organic liquid fertilizer.
